Originally started by Susanna Saw and Tay Cher Siang as a quartet for the Young KL Singers’ jazz production, Breakin’ It Down, the original group that would eventually become Caipifruta comprised Tracy Wong (soprano), Lai Suk Yin (mezzo-soprano/alto), Aaron Teoh (tenor), and Joel Wong (baritone). All of them enjoyed the experience so much they decided to make the quartet a permanent institution. After a year’s hiatus due to Aaron’s departure for further studies, they got back together to make music with the help of three instrumentalists; Tay Cher Siang (piano), Vincent Ong (bass), andEdmund Yong (drums); and the result of that was Caipifruta. Since then, the group has evolved into a predominantly vocal ensemble of four singers.
Caipifruta’s first major project was in July 2010 where they made their international debut at the World Choir Games in Shaoxing, China, competing in the Jazz and Pop Open categories. Together with virtuoso pianist Tay Cher Siang, they returned triumphant with a Gold V diploma in the Jazz category and a Gold II diploma in the Pop category. They also released their debut EP, ‘Introducing Caipifruta!’ that same month. At the World Youth Choir Championships 2011 in Graz, Austria, they obtained two silver medals, also for Pop and Jazz. They continue to expand their musical horizons, recently being nominated for Best Vocal Group Performance at The Anugerah Industri Muzik 18 (Malaysian Music Industry Awards), 2011. Since then, they have performed in Malaysia at venues such as The Actor’s Studio Lot@10, The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre, and The Performing Arts Centre of Penang.
Like the drink which is their namesake, Caipifruta’s musical style is fun, smooth, prone to surprises and occasionally just a little nutty. Their repertoire can be described as light, tongue-in-cheek with splashes of Jazz, a dash of pop and even a slice or two of Broadway, all shaken together with a twist of humour and a hint of the unexpected.
